Lockdown

Batemans Bay

Well as you can imagine I have absolutely nothing to share from the past couple of months. It seems like an age since Emily and I popped down the coast to see my father-in-law lead the St Patrick's Day celebrations at the Catalina Club in Batemans Bay.

Rog gets the party started

Since then we've been stuck in lockdown along with everybody else around the planet. At least I've been able to go into work though and so it has been possible to interact with other people throughout. Apart from the moronic panic-buying early in the piece (which resulted in a dire toilet paper shortage) and the inability to get out into the bush it's not really been too bad at all. Thankfully the virus never really got a hold down here and so things haven't been too stressful. Restrictions are starting to lift now and over the last couple of weekends we've been allowed to go and visit other households and so Emily and I were able to get up the hill to see the in-laws. It was very nice to get among the trees again which have, by the way, recovered very well after November's fire. Wider travel is imminent although state and national borders are still closed. Some level of birding and fishing should be back on the cards though.

Of course according to the Australian media, desperate as usual to try and be a part of things globally, it's been a complete disaster. And now with curves flattening and restrictions being lifted they begin to crow about how Australia has coped better than anywhere else and how superior they are to countries unfortunately afflicted much worse than here. They don't seem to realise that we have a small population, geographically isolated, and with enough space for everyone to get out there and swing a kangaroo to their heart's content. I've seen the general population here and just how seriously they've been adhering to the lockdown rules. Let's just say I'm very glad the virus didn't make it here properly. Once again David Horne's 1964 book 'The Lucky Country' continues to show relevance today where an oblivious population rejoice in their success thinking that it's all down to them rather than simple dumb luck. Anyway, rant over. Stay safe everyone.
